SYLVILAGUS BACHMANI

Dream it.
The scientific name Sylvilagus Bachmani refers to the Brush Rabbit, a small rabbit species native to the western regions of North America, primarily found in the shrublands and dense brush areas of California and Oregon. Brush Rabbits have distinct characteristics: while they are similar to other rabbits in the genus Sylvilagus that inhabit North America, they are smaller in size and specifically adapted to their unique habitats. These rabbits are usually solitary and, when threatened, swiftly flee or seek refuge in their dens. This zine is inspired by the Brush Rabbit, the most commonly seen rabbit species on the campus of my alma mater, CalArts, and imagines interviewing this rabbit as a central concept.

Build it.
This zine focuses on image-making to depict a narrative where the Easter Bunny ushers in spring after the cold of winter. With its chilly, adventurous, and fantastical qualities, winter contrasts with spring, which is lush, dreamy, and full of life. Though opposites, these two seasons are the closest in transition. I sought to explore how this gap in temperature and mood could be expressed through color.

Grow it.
Main The central character of the zine, Thumpber, is an Easter Bunny who emerges at the tail end of winter, bringing spring to a world-weary from the cold. The imagery incorporates elements inspired by the Fabergé eggs, often called the most luxurious Easter eggs, paired with a serif typeface rich in curves to evoke the rabbit's innate charm and softness.
